It seems that everyday new and innovative social networking websites crop up and Google no less has now launched Google Buzz, underlining their intentions to move from not only dominating the search engine market, but competing strongly with the likes of Facebook and Twitter as well.

Similar to Twitter and Facebook, Google Buzz allows people to broadcast messages, upload and share photos and videos with their online community. However unlike these two social giants, Buzz is integrated directly into Google’s Gmail and will automatically build each users’ social network inline with their most emailed contacts. Therefore with Buzz you don’t have to hunt down your friends and colleagues and send and receive connection requests— it just there.

Google spokeswoman Victoria Katsarou stated “We have considered, among all the other features that we add to Buzz in the future, to create a stand-alone experience in addition to it being in Gmail”

It’s clearly a very slick new social networking tool, it even has a voice shortcut so you can update posts and messages without even having to type! Something the iPhone community will no doubt love.

Will this really be something Twitter and Facebook should worry about? Also what new search engine marketing opportunties will it bring?

Facebook has recently made two major moves to bring more control and security to its worldwide membership of more than 350 million users.

The first is to allow their members to review and update their privacy settings and provide user friendly features to empower its members to set how their personal information is shared, which is a first among major social networking websites.

Of interest to many will be the fact they are now giving people a free six month trial with the well known security software McAfee. Facebook announced on their blog:

“One of the best defenses against security threats is a good offense, and we want to help you take the offensive by having the latest security software installed on your computer. We are announcing a year-long partnership with McAfee to offer…the ability to download a six-month subscription to McAfee security software at no cost, along with a special discount once the six months are over”

You can take advantage of this offer by visiting the Protect Your PC tab on the McAfee Page on Facebook.

Unlike other social giants like MySpace and Facebook, Twitter is yet to rake in big bucks through its popular global social networking site.

If their online jobs board online jobs board is anything to go by, this is due to change. Rumour has it that Twitter is building a team of experts to help monetise their website.

Currently Twitter attracts around 18 million users so in terms of potential they are up there with the best of them.

Like other social networking sites Twitter has attracted attention from partners and investors. In October of last year many report that Twitter gained as much as $25 million to license its data feed to the likes of Google and Microsoft.

This move was no doubt aimed at not only improving their search engine optimisation, so their content will rank well in Google, but also to allow Google and Microsoft to integrate with the Twitter phenomenon.

Good luck to them and it will be interesting to see what monetising techniques they come up with.
